Neuroscience of consciousness

Definition

The empirical research programme that asks which physical processes in the brain correspond to subjective experience and how they can be measured.

Why it matters

The frame Andrei works in is dynamics-first: rather than asking where consciousness 'is' in the brain, it asks what large-scale temporal patterns the brain organises while it is conscious. Coherence and phase-locking — Including φ-coupling — Are the natural vocabulary for that.

Example

Comparing the EEG of resting wakefulness, deep sleep, and integrative meditation reveals very different long-range coherence structures even when local power spectra look similar.
