The avatar
Definition
Andrei's term for the social identity — The name, ID, role and persona that society assigns to a person — As distinct from the underlying agent who chooses what to do with it.
Why it matters
Treating the avatar as the self is the central confusion the book addresses. Once you can see the avatar as a costume the commander wears, decisions stop being about defending an identity and start being about steering one.
Example
A founder who can't sell a company because 'I am the founder' is collapsing the commander into the avatar — And losing optionality because of it.
